In the 1800's Lyceum corporations were prevalent in rural communities. Their mission was to bring culture to places that did not have access to theaters, lecture halls and concerts. The Lyceum in Sandy Spring organized travel lectures, musicals, plays and a yearly history of the area, known as The Annals. The Lyceum Concert series has revived this tradition of "culture in the country" by hosting four concerts a year. Currently the Hosford School of Music's faculty performs classical and popular music in the Dr. Bird room on Sunday afternoons.
